A mix of information

The first part of this book contains a mix of 8 "strange" (as the title suggests) stories. The stories are an eclectic assortment of ghost tales and legend but all of them will most likely seem strange to the Western mind. Individually, the stories seem confusing, perhaps even without point, but take them as a whole and they begin to paint a picture. They lend the reader a strong sense of the Eastern mind. It is really, quite a lovely collection.

The second part of this book, contains a collection of three "essays", if you will, on insects. In particular, a sampling of insects which hold some place within Japan's culture or customs - butterflies, mosquitos and ants are covered here. To my mind, this is an unfortunate departure from the first half of the book's legends and tales. The information will likely seem a bit dry as Lafcadio Hearn (LH) hails from a different time and to many modern minds, I would think the words of his essays may seem rambling. Nonetheless, they are interesting in and of themselves for the information within. If I were to truly pick apart the fine particulars of the two subject matters, I could surely list some fine argument here as to why they are brought together as one, but in the end, the contrast is greater than the benefit. I find they cause quite some disharmony when brought together.

Two last notes for this e-book version: 1) there may be some off-putting words to the modern mind in this book's introduction, which LH had written in January of 1904, in the earliest hours of the Russo-Japanese War. For example, LH references Japanese soldiers on their war boats as "little men", etc. If you can forgive these words as those from a different time, the meat of this book will be your reward, and 2) for those that appreciate additional information, endnotes are included at the end of each tale.

Lafcadio Hearn is well enough known to both Japanese and Westerners alike, and well enough respected by both for his translations of Japanese tales that it would seem almost criminal for a Western student of things Japanese, to completely ignore his works. This book and any of his compilations of Japanese ghost stories and legends are highly recommended.

Excellent collection of old Japanese Stories of the supernatural! Stories of ghosts, demons, goblins, and other creatures of the supernatural. Japan has a rich history of Yokai which are creatures of the supernatural. In Shinto tradition everything has Kami or spirit in it, so anything can develop into supernatural beings of good, evil, or just a neutral spirit being. Fascinating reading!

The Report Builder' Bible

Over the years I have been on quite a few projects and there have been very few if any that did not require some type of reporting. For a while that meant Crystal Reports, but when SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) hit the scene, Crystal Reports began to fade on Microsoft projects. That was especially true if I had my way. I was the first person to champion SSRS in state projects in Pennsylvania. That was quite a battle but well worth it!

SSRS is one of the best solutions to come out of Microsoft. I don't say that lightly. I have plenty of complaints about different Microsoft products, but none about SSRS. The extensibility model built into the architecture makes the product completely customizable through extension.

This book introduces the SSRS architecture, the report manager, the basics of databases and database queries, but every topic introduced supports the report builder role. This book is all about the report builder. The chapters are listed below.

One thing that struck me as a little weird was there was no "What's new in SSRS 2012" section. That is no big deal as I usually skip those sections anyway, but some readers may be looking for it. One big change that was worth mentioning was no more Report Models. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere in the book.

Reports can be built using Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2010 with the SQL Server Data Tools add-in, and Report Builder. The author does a great job showing how to use the different tools with each example when usage is different. This really helps you get familiar with the tools and in the end will help you choose which tool you would like to use.

There is no coverage of custom extensions. My review started by touting that that is my favorite part of the product, so I was disappointed to see nothing about it. Although I do believe the content of this book will take you to the maximum possible potential of creating and delivering reports with the out of the box functionality, I have had to write custom extensions on many projects in order to meet the client's requirements. It is a topic that I would like to see covered and have seen covered in other reporting services books. However, I am not going to ding the book for this because I know that 99.9% of the reporting services authors will never have to write a custom extension or even have to know they exist.

My favorite part of the book was the hands on approach the author takes to teach us the ins and outs of SSRS. The best way to read this book is with Visual Studio or Report Builder open. The author goes through tons of step by step tasks.

Another thing I really liked was the coverage of data visualization. One of the biggest business user requests I hear is for data visualization in the form of charts, images, and gauges. This book will teach you how to use all three. It also includes great coverage of maps and spatial data types.

One last thing I really like about this book is that the author does a great job of teaching the reader how to retrieve data. In the beginning of the book he does an excellent job explaining joins. Then throughout the book he advances the reader to some fairly complex queries using joins. After running through all the examples you'll know how to get to the data you want.

Like I said above this is a Report Builder's book. If you want to learn everything there is about building reports, this is the book to teach you. The best part though is that you do not have to have any experience. This book takes the beginner from databases 101 to beginning reports, through intermediate reports, to building advanced reports.

The downloadable code is well organized and very usable. The author includes a database and an OLAP database. Both come with instructions for installing and configuring. All the code works well and adds a lot of value to the book.

All in all if you are building SQL Server 2102 Reporting Services Reports, or if you are interested in learning how to, you owe it to yourself to get this book.

An excellent resource

This is a fantastic resource on Reporting Services. It is very comprehensive, and the chapters and subsections are well thought out and make for a very smooth progression through the material. It provides a great selection of real world examples and best practices concerning a huge variety of the components of Reporting Services. A must buy for someone looking to learn or someone wanting very strong reference material close by.

Outstanding book

This book is outstanding. Very professionally written, with deep knowledge of the subject, with lots of detailed examples for both SSMS and ReportBuilder, and no mistakes found while implementing examples- what else could you wish if need to get on the subject quickly?
I had already the book for SSRS 2005 from the known authors, but this one beats it both hands down for its clear presentation and directions.
Nothing important for me is omitted. Deservingly - 5 stars.

A Word to the Wise

Where were Gary Winters and "What Your Boss Never Told You" when I really needed it? Here I am at the end of my career and I finally read a management book that encapsulates 40 years of learning the hard way. It is not so much a "how to" book as a "heads-up things to think about" book. I might have titled it "A Word to the Wise". The author doesn't try to provide pat solutions to every management situation, but makes the reader aware of what to look for to avoid managerial pitfalls. I couldn't find a single chapter where I didn't have an anecdote that supported author's assertions. As I began each chapter I tried to anticipate what I thought were important points to make and I was not once disappointed. It doesn't matter where you are in your management career "What Your Boss Never Told You" is a great starting place for a new manager or an excellent refresher for the seasoned veteran.

Like Operating a Floor Sander!

This is an excellent, valuable book. I've read numerous management and supervision books over the years. Some were notable. Most of the others quickly became forgettable. "What Your Boss Never Told You" is one of the very best I've come across, and here's why. Gary Winters has a wonderful knack for getting right to the point, concisely and clearly. So, as a "read," the 120 pages of WYBNTY breeze along nicely. The other equally important aspect of this book is that Winters has made these management stories and lessons REAL. There is virtually nothing intellectual or scholastic about this book - and I seriously mean this as a high complement. Winters takes us for a walk through real workplaces, with real stories and real people trying to figure out how to become better managers. This book is chock full of practical tangible, useful wisdom. I've been a manager for fifteen years, and I learned a lot from the lessons and stories in WYBNTY. It's right up there with "Leadership Jazz" in my short list of greatest books about effective management and leadership. And Winters is right - I didn't know it until I had it comfirmed by this book, but managing people IS indeed like operating a floor sander!

This book is exactly what every new supervisor/manager needs to help him or her navigate the first 6 months in the new role! The issues that Winters has illustrated generally don't come up in management training, but they are vital to understand. This book isn't about "skill building," it's about the unexpected isses that pop up and require some thinking. Having this book is like having a mentor who knows just what you are dealing with and provides great advice!

A good informative book

HUGE contains a lot of good information for those trying to bulk up. The food sections contained a lot good facts but I thought the exercise sections were lacking a bit. The authors could have broken the muscles down a little bit more to show the reader what exercises work what muscle and which go together better. The Arnold book I thought contained a lot more info and would be the better value.

Better Than It Looks

This book has a split personality, which I find intriguing.

One the one hand, each spread contains 'roided out pro bodybuilders, which I find kind of gross. On the other hand, the program itself takes a very reasonable and moderate approach. You read things like "don't train more than four days a week" and "take a week off in between programs." The routines are tried-and-true. Intensity techniques and (heaven help us) Weider Principles are discussed but are rarely implemented.

The core of this book--the workouts and diets--is excellent. I found the chapter on "The Perfect Rep" to be very helpful. If this book had no pictures I'd give it 5 stars.

A collection of short stories from various sources

This book is a collection of 25 short stories. They are simple but you can if you want read great depth in them. These stories would make good starters for a reading group or circle. They are professional but not extraordinary or unique.

"The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal in every way."

I bought this book for one story in particular "Harrison Bergeron"; I bought the movie with Sean Astin and thought even if the story was fleshed out to be more like "This Perfect Day". So I thought it would be time to read the story. Unfortunately the short story can not hold a candle to the movie. It never really gets off the ground and comes to a curt conclusion never resolving the conflict.

Not what I expected

I'm not sure what I thought this book would be like when I started it, but I had a feeling it would not be that great. Boy, was I wrong. This book is an epic - a fantastic journey through time to the ancient Roman Empire where the mad Emperor Caligula can send a whole legion off on a useless, suicidal mission, all to get rid of one man. We follow the XIIIth Legion, the 'Emperor's Own', as they meet obstacle after obstacle thrown in their path, but they press ever onward. This is the best, most complete picture I have ever read of what the daily life of the legionaire was really like. But there is more to this book than that. We meet a whole company of raw recruits who are more or less fooled into 'signing on the dotted line', including a newlywed poet. His bride hears 'a woman's place is with her husband' and off she goes to follow the legion. At first we see her as a childish fool but as the legion moves on and she manages to stick with it, we come to appreciate her commitment, her love and her loyalty. And so do all the others in the XIII. This crack Roman legion now has a female member, Lilia. Off they go to strange lands, exotic and dangerous, make new friends and many new enemies, all the while being followed by a stranger alone. We see the raw recruits become tough, hardened soldiers, and we know each as individuals and mourn their loses. The final 100 pages will bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart as this brave group of men and one brave woman, both fail and suceed in their mission. And they changed the fate of half the world as well. This is an outstanding novel that left me at 4 am, with my mouth hanging open, saying "Wow". I couldn't sleep for hours, remembering all these characters who became my friends and being happy they had entered my life and allowed me to know them. This is truly an epic work. One of the best. Read it.

Roman adventure story

An adventure story about a Roman Legion sent on a suicide mission to find information about survivors of Crassus's defeated legions in ancient Parthia (modern Afghanistan and Iran.)
The story is told mostly from the eyes of a young Roman woman recently married to a "recruit" captured by a Roman press gang and by the commander of the legion who learns that he was sent on the mission out of jealously by the Emperor Caligula of the commander's popularity and lineage.
The material of daily Roman life is pretty well fictionalized and it is easy to suspend belief as to some of the improbalities and licenses taken.

Well written but ultimately disappointing tale

"The Lost Legion" is a well-written tale incorporating some interesting characters and plot lines. The story concerns the fate of a crack Roman legion (the Thirteenth) whose commander, Manlius Varro, has fallen out of favor with the mad emperor Caligula. To get Manlius out of the way, Caligula sends him and his legion on a quest deep into Asia to recover the standard of the Lost Legion, a Roman army that disappeared without a trace on that frontier 100 years earlier.

Notwithstanding the book's imposing length at 621 pages, there are several issues that made reading this book a less than satisfying experience. One is the author's use of certain technical terms that I found unfamiliar and may be unfamiliar to most readers. Another is the author's long-winded, idiosyncratic style. Also, the first few hundred pages are basically concerned with its heroine "Lilia" finding her way out of Rome in order to follow her husband Tibullus, who has just unwittingly joined the legion. I found myself struggling to maintain my interest at the author's insistence in documenting her every little exploit out of Italy. Much of this exposition could have been done away with without sacrificing the book's integrity.

However, my real problem lies in the motivations of some of the central characters. For example, I had to wonder why Manlius Varro, the commander of the Thirteenth Legion, would obstinately continue to follow Caligula's orders even when he had learned that the emperor had been assassinated and the orders were no longer valid. What was Manlius trying to prove? In his refusal to modify his course of action in spite of this new knowledge, he seems to be just as insane as Caligula. Worse yet, it is not just his fate that is at stake, it is the fate of the legion itself. In addition, why should Manlius care one bit about the fate of the soldiers of the Lost Legion, who after a full century, had been assimilated into the local population? Without Caligula's valid directive, why put himself and his men at risk for some obscure standard? But this is exactly what he does, bringing disaster to all concerned.

Lilia's motives, too, must be questioned. Tibullus, for the most part, treats her indifferently, often harshly, even though he says he loves her. Yet, she slavishly follows the naive belief that a woman should go where her husband goes. This attitude is inconsistent with her otherwise intelligent and strong-willed nature. When she finds herself thinking romantic thoughts about Manlius despite herself, and berating herself for feeling that she is betraying her love for Tibullus, it is almost laughable.

For me, the most disillusioning part of the book was its conclusion. In a final battle with the Huns, the Thirteenth Legion is utterly destroyed. The only survivors of the encounter are a small scouting party of twenty men who did not take part in the battle, Lilia who is pregnant, and Eitel (a Hun fighting on the side of the Romans and enamored of Lilia). Lilia and Eitel are taken in by the Huns. Lilia has her baby and remains with Eitel. It is insinuated that Attila is the direct descendant of her progeny. The small band of 20 Romans is decimated shortly thereafter by a horde of Tartars in a brief skirmish outside the walls of a local town. Tribune Quintus is the only one who survives and is taken in by the townspeople who previously refused to let the Romans enter. We learn only on the very last page of the book that these townspeople are indeed the descendants of the men of the Lost Legion--Roman/Asiatic hybrids who still retained some vestiges of their Roman past.

In the final analysis, all these people have sacrificed their lives for nothing. With Commander Varro's unflinching devotion to duty at all costs, he dooms himself and his men to certain death. It is obsession bordering on madness. The final payoff, that Quintus has discovered the remnants of the long-forgotten legion and will live to return to Rome to tell his fellow Romans of his adventures, is small satisfaction in light of an expedition as hopeless as unnecessary as the search for the Lost Legion.
