Based on five years of ethnography, archival research, census data analysis, and interviews, Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries reveals how the LAPD, city prosecutors, and business owners struggled to control who should be considered “dangerous” and how they should be policed in Los Angeles. Sociologist Ana Muñiz shows how these influential groups used policies and everyday procedures to criminalize behaviors commonly associated with blacks and Latinos and to promote an exceedingly aggressive form of policing.
 
Muñiz illuminates the degree to which the definitions of “gangs” and “deviants” are politically constructed labels born of public policy and court decisions, offering an innovative look at the process of criminalization and underscoring the ways in which a politically powerful coalition can define deviant behavior. As she does so, Muñiz also highlights the various grassroots challenges to such policies and the efforts to call attention to their racist effects. Muñiz describes the fight over two very different methods of policing: community policing (in which the police and the community work together) and the “broken windows” or “zero tolerance” approach (which aggressively polices minor infractions—such as loitering—to deter more serious crime). Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries also explores the history of the area to explain how Cadillac-Corning became viewed by outsiders as a “violent neighborhood” and how the city’s first gang injunction—a restraining order aimed at alleged gang members—solidified this negative image. As a result, Muñiz shows, Cadillac-Corning and other sections became a test site for repressive practices that eventually spread to the rest of the city.

David Allan received his medical training at Cambridge University and Guy’s Hospital in
England. He was Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Bellevue Hospital in New York City before
moving to San Diego, California.
Dr. Allan has worked as a family physician in England, a pediatrician in San Diego, and
Associate Dean at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He has designed,
written, and produced more than 100 award-winning multimedia programs with virtual reality
as their conceptual base. Dr. Allan resides happily in San Diego.

Karen D. Lockyer
Karen Lockyer holds a degree in Health Information (RHIT), a national coding certification
(CPC), and a BS from Rutgers University. She is also a credentialed member of AHIMA
(American Health Information Management Association) and AAPC (American Academy of
Professional Coders).
Mrs. Lockyer has worked in medical practice administration and the Health Information
Management fields for many years. She has taught medical terminology for high school,
community college, and workforce development areas at the National Institutes of Health and
the federal government’s Office of Personnel Management. She has also taught coding and
billing for undergraduate and certificate programs at the community college level.

DOESN'T INCULED CONNECT ACCESS CODE!! Book is in great shape but I thought since I was ordering a brand new book the connect access code would be included. It wasn't and it will now cost just as much as the bookstore since I have to purchase the online access.

BEWARE! The online modules do not match the information covered in the text book. Worst Support Ever.

This book is cheat made with very thin pages which tear when turning them. The subject material is grouped by system but information is sometimes vague. If your taking this course with the Connect courseware or online BEWARE! The online modules do not match the information covered in the text book. Halfway through the course my registration magically expired. I emailed customer support and nothing happened but the college informed me McGrawhill was working on it because it effected several classes. After a couple weeks of nothing happening, I called the help desk located in the Philippines. I have nothing against people who speak English as a second language but I didn't buy this product in the Philippines and I don't like supporting slave labor in foreign countries for 120.00 cheaply made book. After an hour on the phone they only thing that was accomplished was re-registering my account with a temporary account not the one on the connect card and they deleted half my completed assignments for the courseware. The issue has still not been resolved and McGrawhill states the didn't know why the issue occurred. Seems if they were half as concern with the viability of the product as they are protecting the registration of their garbage courseware they wouldn't have to contract to 3rd world countries to support it.

The book was in excellent condition, but as a "Brand New" book, the access code that usually comes with the "New" books was nowhere to be found. Nowhere does it state it will not be included. My only disappointment.

I have always wondered why exactly I was here. I'm not an "average," person~~I don't follow trends or fashions. I'm not particularly intimate and have no extraordinary talent. The only thing(s) I believe in are honesty, trustworthiness, empathy, sympathy, and a sense of "doing good" in the world.

I believe that everyone is a guardian angel to someone, but I've only been able to identify with my guardian angels. It never occurred to me that *I* could be one, too! Friends suggested I read this wonderful book ... as soon as I started to, I realized that there IS a reason for my existence.

I can't do a lot of things I could do in the past, but I have a [relatively] new outlook on things, which apparently, suggests that somewhere along the line, I was chosen to be an angel for someone else. I hope I can fulfill my mission~~because if you believe in something; it's bound to work.

This is not a "how-to" book; everything discussed was already a part of my life. I don't go around "trying to be" .... I just "am." I know because of the feedback I get from people I meet. All I "try" to do is be myself~~I'm learning that's pretty awesome.

AND, I don't 'try,' I just do.
