About The Book:

OM! GLORY TO VÁSUDEVA...

"The Vishnu Purana is a primary sacred text of the Vaishnava branch of Hinduism, which today probably has more adherents than any other. It is one of the canonical Puranas, a branch of post-Vedic sacred literature which was first committed to writing during the first millennium of the common era. Like most of the other Puranas, this is a complete narrative from the creation of the current universe to its destruction. The chronology describes periods as long as a hundred trillion (1014) years! It includes extensive sections on the genealogy of the legendary kings, heroes and demigods of ancient India, including those from the epics, the Mahabharata and Ramayana. There are fascinating descriptions of ancient Hindu cosmology and geography. Of general interest is a collection of stories about the boyhood adventures of Krishna and Rama, whom the Vaishnavas believe to be avatars of Vishnu. There are also references to Buddhism and Jainism, which help establish the date of composition of the work."

The literature of the Hindus has now been cultivated for many years with singular diligence, and in many of its branches with eminent success. There are some departments, however, which are yet but partially and imperfectly investigated; and we are far from being in possession of that knowledge which the authentic writings of the Hindus alone can give us of their religion, mythology, and historical traditions.

From the materials to which we have hitherto had access, it seems probable that there have been three principal forms in which the religion of the Hindus has existed, at as many different periods. The duration of those periods, the circumstances of their succession, and the precise state of the national faith at each season, it is not possible to trace with any approach to accuracy. The premises have been too imperfectly determined to authorize other than conclusions of a general and somewhat vague description, and those remain to be hereafter confirmed or corrected by more extensive and satisfactory research.

Of the dissolution of the world: the four ages: the decline of all things, and deterioration of mankind, in the Kali age.

I agree with the review given by J. Cheevers. This book is naught but the author's own interpretation and views, a really bad one in that. It is pretty clear that the author does not have the necessary background to comment on an immense work such as this. He liberally uses uncalled for words such as "crude", "primitive" etc as if he understands what he is talking about.

I guess this is one of those 19th century works similar to those who propounded false ideas such as Aryan invasion etc.

One of the important literature produced by the human mind.

This literature is part of the key to Indian thinking. Just like Western Science, today, which is seeking to understand Nature, the ancient Indian tackled this problem and found the only possible solution, which , no doubt Western Science will eventually find, if they don't destroy the planet first.

Fascinating and Insightful
By Michael Mathison
Though written over 40 years ago, Carswell's study of the South Sea Bubble is brilliant. The South Sea Bubble was an ambitious scheme to simultaneously pay off the British government's enormous debts while simultaneously getting rich in London's newly created stock market. In essence, holders of government debt exchanged valuable bonds and annuities for stock which ultimately became worthless. Carswell teases out the details which are so important to understanding how the fraud worked, while at the same time capturing the big picture of British politics and society, and the fascinating personalities of the main actors in the government and the South Sea Company. Carswell writes with humor, insight, and a clarity few modern historians can match. Buy this classic study in preference to the recently published books on the subject, which are neither as readable nor as thorough.

Tying it all together.
By She who must be writing
Did you know that the Bank of England was formed originally by a bunch of businessmen wanting to use debt-collection methods on the English Government? That the Guinea was not always worth 21 shillings? And that the back of each London credit house had bundles of sticks representing debts?
Fascinating information and history of the start of the English economic rush that was so viciously stalled in 1720 when the country's biggest investment craze turned out to be an early Ponzi scheme. Learn how far King George I and his "nieces" were involved. Discover why stock is called "stock" (and it's nothing to do with cattle!)

This House (Modern Plays), by James Graham

This country doesn't need a constitution, never has, never will. We have History as our guide. In tough times, the British do what we have always done. We muddle through.

This House is a timely and relevant political comedy, exploring Westminster and the 1974 hung parliament.

In the run-up to the General Election pressure mounts as squabbling whips attempt to attract key regional votes. As it becomes clear the results will be closely balanced, the play tracks the formation, perils and consequences of a coalition government, including the compromises, conflicts and power games all in the interest of gaining control of Parliament.

With well-paced, witty and waspish dialogue, This House playfully explores the childish digs and chauvinistic attitudes that riddle political life. Award-winning playwright James Graham combines comedy with comment in this portrayal of the strain between the thinking individual, the pressure to toe the part line and the end goal of winning government.

Adventure on the moon!
By M Elliott "a reader from TX"
Crater Trueblood is an orphaned 16 year-old who lives and works on the moon. He has a job he likes mining moon dust; he has friends; he is happy. In an on-the-job emergency, Crater's quick thinking saves lives and equipment and captures the attention of Colonel Medaris, who owns the mining company and much of the moon's other developments. The Colonel recruits Crater, who has extraordinary mechanical and engineering skills, for a mission. He will travel as a scout, along with the Colonel's attractive and feisty granddaughter, Maria, for a convoy of truckers delivering Helium 3, the fuel extracted from moon dust, to a transport site on the other side of the moon. When there, he will also take possession of a mysterious package to be delivered to the Colonel. And so begins Crater's great journey across the moon.

Hickam, an engineer for NASA, is the author of several books, including Rocket Boys, a novel based on his own life, and Back to the Moon. This is his first young adult novel, the beginning of a trilogy, and is a rollicking good tale, enjoyable to adults as well as younger readers. The innocent, somewhat naïve and just plain good Crater is both appealing and a great role model, with his strong sense of justice and fair play. He is also smart and brave (though he doesn't think so), and has what another character calls "true grit" (a nod to Charles Portis' great novel about another courageous youngster who "set out across the territory," the unforgettable Mattie Ross). Crater's journey across the vast, unpopulated reaches of the moon is, in fact, very reminiscent of the American old west, the convoy of truckers not unlike a cattle drive or wagon train, with a threat of ambush from the uncivilized and lawless, and weapons that include flechettes (arrows).

A skillful and entertaining writer, Hickam blends imagination and futuristic ideas with actual science in provoking and intriguing ways. Besides Crater, he creates other characters we care about, including a "gillie" -described as a collection of slime mold cells--which rides in a holster on Crater's shoulder and functions as a combination of Iphone, Ipad, PDA, and personal computer. There's also a horse named Pegasus and his Will Rogers-like owner; Crater's friend, Petro, who may or may not be the heir to the British throne; and several creative--and wonderfully named-- villains. Hickam infuses his story with warmth, humor, and unobtrusive but significant observations on the social aspect of an imagined future: what it is like to live on the moon, the sobering results of bio engineering, and the age-old disproportion of greed, power, and responsibility among those who take risks and settle frontiers. I look forward to Hickam's second Helium 3 story, and the further adventures of young Crater Trueblood.

Teachers will love this book almost as much as teens!
By Amazon Customer
Science, math, and English teachers are going to love this book. "CRATER" is wild romp across vast stretches of the lunar landscape that is reminiscent of the Wild, Wild West. Just as California minors used to push 20 mule-team borax conveys across the Mohave Desert, teen Crater joins a future and very modern Helium 3, or Hel-3,convoy across the Moon's vast empty stretches. Homer Hickam keeps the reader guessing and in suspense as the story twists and turns between Luna and Earth. Hickam's many years as a NASA engineer bring science and realism to the world he masterfully creates. Although by no means a text book, Homer's descriptions of the 22d century tech embody the best ideas coming out of NASA - Marshall Space Flight Center. CRATER is a page turner that is impossible to put down. It is well written, informative, and provocative, without gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language. Take note librarians: CRATER is a must for inclusion on summer reading lists . Keep writing Homer your fans await the upcoming sequels. Geared toward a younger crowd
By Jessie Potts
Crater took me a while to finish because it was very, very slow to start off with. I find that sometimes this is the case with sci-fi books, the author/s want to make sure that the setting/rules/world is clearly understood. When Crater finally picked up it was honestly the gillie that stole the show not the main character. Gillie is basically an illegal slime mold type of organism that has brains, wit and helps the hero Crater on his journey.

I won't rehash the plot but I feel like if I were younger I'd enjoy this book even more. There are many YA books that transcend the genre, but Crater excelled at everything he did, the hardships didn't seem that realistic and the ending was wrapped up way too nicely and quickly. Especially the reason behind all the killings, it seemed like if I was younger I would be able to accept it, but it seemed a really dumb thing to kill for to me now.

I have a younger cousin who I think would really enjoy this (he's 11 and loves adventure books with a male pov) So I'll update later. All in all if you like younger sci-fi YA books and are interested in the slime mold concept I'd pick it up, it's slow but interesting, if you're looking for a fast paced real sci-fi novel I'd pass.

O.K...just O.K.
By Gob
The first book in the series asked a lot of provoking questions about a country infatuated with war and reality television; these questions fall flat in the second installment. While the series certainly keeps its action, it just isn't as though-provoking or even interesting. It is like a generic popcorn movie flick. The ending sets up for a promising third installment that may be good enough to forgive this in between work, but I'm not holding my breath.

Great Sequel!!!
By Mangacat
I really enjoyed the first one, but Volume 2 is much more action packed. Also it feels like more happens in this volume and I know and care about the characters much more. The art is a bit different from the first but equally excellent. There are some great action sequences in there that I could see in a movie for sure. And I definitely want to know how this can possibly work out for Mark and Snow.

A good read
By Moltar 1138
I liked book two better than book one. Since there are no new characters to introduce with new backstory, this flows a lot better, with a tighter story. Artwork is great. Plenty of action.

Beyond Biocentrism: Rethinking Time, Space, Consciousness, and the Illusion of Death, by Robert Lanza

Biocentrism shocked the world with a radical rethinking of the nature of reality.

But that was just the beginning.

In Beyond Biocentrism, acclaimed biologist Robert Lanza, one of TIME Magazine’s "100 Most Influential People in 2014," and leading astronomer Bob Berman, take the reader on an intellectual thrill-ride as they re-examine everything we thought we knew about life, death, the universe, and the nature of reality itself.

The first step is acknowledging that our existing model of reality is looking increasingly creaky in the face of recent scientific discoveries. Science tells us with some precision that the universe is 26.8 percent dark matter, 68.3 percent dark energy, and only 4.9 percent ordinary matter, but must confess that it doesn’t really know what dark matter is and knows even less about dark energy. Science is increasingly pointing toward an infinite universe but has no ability to explain what that really means. Concepts such as time, space, and even causality are increasingly being demonstrated as meaningless.

All of science is based on information passing through our consciousness but science hasn’t the foggiest idea what consciousness is, and it can’t explain the linkage between subatomic states and observation by conscious observers. Science describes life as an random occurrence in a dead universe but has no real understanding of how life began or why the universe appears to be exquisitely designed for the emergence of life.

The biocentrism theory isn’t a rejection of science. Quite the opposite. Biocentrism challenges us to fully accept the implications of the latest scientific findings in fields ranging from plant biology and cosmology to quantum entanglement and consciousness.

By listening to what the science is telling us, it becomes increasingly clear that life and consciousness are fundamental to any true understanding of the universe. This forces a fundamental rethinking of everything we thought we knew about life, death, and our place in the universe.

Review
"Lanza and Berman employ cutting edge science to rediscover ancient truths about life and death and reconceptualize our very notions of reality and consciousness. Beyond Biocentrism is an enlightening and fascinating journey that will forever alter your understanding of your own existence."
—Deepak Chopra

"Beyond Biocentrism is a joyride through the history of science and cutting-edge physics, all with a very serious purpose: to find the long-overlooked connection between the conscious self and the universe around us."
—Corey S. Powell, former editor-in-chief, Discover magazine

"This intriguing and provocative book will challenge some of what you know and push you into rethinking your view of science—all the while entertaining you with a fast-paced, exhilarating narrative journey."
—David J. Eicher, editor in chief, Astronomy Magazine

"[Beyond Biocentrism] offers a neurobiological point of view to help answer questions about the world around us. Lanza and Berman make the journey towards a better understanding of the role of consciousness and perception. . . . A fun read.”
—Kwang-Soo Kim, professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Harvard Medical School, and director, Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory, McLean Hospital

"Lanza and Berman's latest statement of their theory of ‘biocentrism’ changes the way we think about age-old religious questions such as the origin of the universe and human immortality. Based on cutting edge work in physics and biology and explained with exceptional clarity, Beyond Biocentrism is a must-read for anyone interested in science and religion."
—Ronald M. Green, professor emeritus for the study of ethics and human values, and former chairman of the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College

"Will machines ever achieve consciousness? Are plants aware? Is death an illusion? These are some of the big questions tackled in Beyond Biocentrism, which serves up a new, biology-based theory of everything that is as delightful to read as it is fascinating. Tremendously clear and lovely writing—a huge achievement."
—Pamela Weintraub, psychology & health editor for Aeon Magazine, former Executive Editor of Discover Magazine and former editor in chief of OMNI Magazine

Praise for Biocentrism:

"An extraordinary mind. . . . Having interviewed some of the most brilliant minds in the scientific world, I found Dr. Robert Lanza’s insights into the nature of consciousness original and exciting. His theory of biocentrism is consistent with the most ancient traditions of the world which say that consciousness conceives, governs, and becomes a physical world. It is the ground of our Being in which both subjective and objective reality come into existence."
—Deepak Chopra

"This is a brave new book. Instead of placing life as an accidental byproduct, the authors place life at the apex of universal existence and purpose. It is a very thrilling and disturbing read. While the proposals made in Biocentrism seem radical and counter-intuitive at first, a bit of reflection will soon make the images clearer and place us on the pathway to a better and more commonsensical mindset."
—Michael Gooch, author of Wingtips with Spurs

"Both interesting and worth the effort of reading it . . . From the way [Lanza] chooses to present his arguments, it’s clear he has a solid grasp of esoteric disciplines . . . His style is conversational . . . And his sense of wonder . . . is as infectious as it is delightful.”
—Midwest Book Review

Whose mind?
By Dienne
Sometimes it feels like my whole life has been a quest for truth. My mother is a devout Methodist while my father is agnostic (not that he really admits as much to my mother). While there are aspects of Christianity that I admire, I grew up knowing that I didn’t buy the whole package. In my teens and young adult years I looked to Eastern religion (Buddhism and Taoism most notably) and science for answers, but, while I’ve often felt like I’m on the verge of a great understanding, I’ve never really found what I’ve been looking for. In my older adult years I have largely abandoned the process. Partially because I’m too busy taking care of kids and putting food on the table, but partially because I’ve started to get the feeling that the quest is pointless.

So I was intrigued when I saw this book. Basically, we’re told, everything we “know” is wrong. I don’t find that much of a leap. At various points I found this book intriguing, exciting, challenging, fulfilling, baffling, irritating and exasperating. Any book that can do all that is probably well worth reading, even if you’re not fully on board with all of the conclusions.

The first half of the book is devoted to deconstructing what we think we know about the world. We delve into quantum theory, relativity and other theories to show that time and space don’t exist, at least not as we commonly perceive them. Contrary to what we “know” with science (not to mention what we feel in our guts), “spooky action at a distance” is not only possible, it’s quite common. Science is so focused on “objectivity” that it leaves a gaping hole in our knowledge – a hole that can only be filled by losing “objectivity”. That is, to really understand and make sense of what science has been telling us, we have to look to the observer – our own subjective sense. The authors take us through experiments like the double slit experiment, as well as looking at entangled twin particles that seem to know and replicate what the other is doing even if the other is galaxies away.

Next we delve into deconstructing the “dumb random universe” theory. Simply by looking at the chances that 10 books arranged randomly on a shelf would happen to end up in alphabetical order (a probability of about 1 in 3.5 million) we can see that it stretches credibility to believe that everything in our universe has ended up the way it is simply by random chance. The chances that a galaxy like ours would randomly have a solar system with a planet that is perfectly suited for life would simply happen because of particles randomly bumping into each other is so astronomical as to be impossible. The authors demolish the idea of string theory (the idea of multiple universes) as being a “theory of everything” and, hence, a theory of nothing. And in any case, even if this dumb random universe theory were correct, no one has yet given a satisfactory explanation as to how consciousness as arisen out of all of this randomness.

The later part of the book develops the authors’ answer to these dilemmas. We have been, in fact, starting backward, trying to arrive at consciousness by studying physics and biology. We should, rather start with consciousness and then the universe makes sense. There is, according to the authors, no “out there” out there. Everything happens in our minds, so it is our minds that we need to start with. In other words, thousands of years of exploration, observation and science have led us back to where the ancient Hindus started thousands of years ago.

I’ll have to admit first off that I am no scientific expert, so I did not follow all of the science in this book. A large part of science is being able to get your head around it – to be able to visualize, even roughly, what the theories and equations are pointing to. I admit I was often rather lost in this way. The authors develop their argument step-by-step, brick-by-brick in a seemingly incontrovertible way. But perhaps because I can’t get my head around it all, I remain skeptical. For one thing, I have to question their sources. Dr. Lanza is a medical doctor, and I have a hard time believing he also has a deep and thorough knowledge of theoretical physics – those are rather big fields for any one person to master. Berman seems to be more of a science generalist who came to the field because of his own “enlightenment” experience. Many of the references seem to come from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN and other layman’s magazines. Not to disparage those publications but, being as they are written for the lay audience, they are of necessity rather simplified. My field is psychology and I have read both academic journals and popular publications like PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. I can tell you that the latter is wildly simplified, often to the point of error.

But in any case, my real issue is that biocentrism doesn’t really solve or explain anything more than any other scientific or religious approach. It just raises more question – many of which are the same as any religion. If everything boils down to consciousness, whence did consciousness come from? Again, we’re back to an unexplainable first cause. Furthermore, whose consciousness? The authors frequently use the words “our mind”. Is this meant to imply a collective consciousness? I suppose so if we’re all part of some overarching consciousness and divisions and dualities are all illusions. (If not, we’re back to Descartes “I think, therefore I am” because I can only verify my own consciousness – perhaps I’m dreaming and making up everything else.)

If there really are no dualities and all is illusion, how did these illusions come to be? Did we each split ourselves off from this overarching consciousness? Or did this consciousness split us off? And in either case, why? What are we “here” for? And what happens after “death” (which doesn’t really exist)? Do we rejoin the larger consciousness? Will we retain any individual sense of ourselves as separate, or will we just merge into the larger whole (which, for all practical purposes is annihilation)? Biocentrism doesn’t answer these fundamental questions any better than “God did it” or “turtles all the way down”.

Moreover, if everything is consciousness and everything else is illusion, that renders life itself meaningless. If there is no death, then it doesn’t matter that people are dying of hunger or war or lack of medical care – they are just rejoining this larger consciousness sooner. In fact, we should all just lay down and die. What difference does suffering and evil and oppression make anyway? While I don’t buy into any of the Western religions, I do admire them for struggling with the meaning of life and death, good and evil, struggle and altruism.

Nonetheless, I am very glad I read this book and I have passed it on to other people and look forward to discussion on the issues raised. I was, as noted, very challenged by this book and it has opened up new possibilities. The book is well written and intriguing, and, despite my skepticism, not easily brushed off or dismissed. Incidentally, I have not read the first book. I would like to go back and see if that book answers any of the questions raised here. Whether you agree, disagree, or simply remain skeptical, I recommend reading this book for some very satisfying food for thought.

Book that will change one's understanding of their own existance
By Eugenia
The first thing I must say about this book it that there are not enough stars to describe what a good read this book truly is. Robert Lanza, MD teamed up with Bob Berman (astrophysicist) to write this wonderful 200 page book that for me -- finally put it all together. I studied physics and can say for myself that I have a mind of scientist that is (over)loaded with logic. But I am also a yoga teacher and since my father's death nearly 10 years ago, I have been actively looking for answers about death, immortality and nature of space and time. I read so many books about the topic, I lost count. That was until I came across this book. Authors finally put it all together for me that both my scientific, logical mind and my spiritual mind could put it all together in a manner that it finally all made sense.

One of the 'a-ha" moments was towards the end of the book when author Lanza acknowledges the fact that plants have consciousness. I was reading that part of the book on the train on my way form work and at one moment, I said out loud (without realizing it) - "Oh my God!" An older gentlemen, a professional man, sitting in a fine, tailored suit next to my seat, was startled and he replied: "Did you miss your train exit? Was I in a way?". I just looked at him and smiled and my response was simply:" Oh, no. It is just that I learned from this book that plants have consciousness! Can you believe it? And there is a proof!".. He was so kind, he looked at me and said after a longer pause replied: "Well, it does kind of make sense - the fact that plants have consciousness...." What can I say - I repeated the same story to my yoga students I was teaching that same night.

The fact is that this book is so rich with references to ancient philosophical books, logic from ancient Greece and how all of that information is relevant today. Authors provide scientific insight on classical physics (Newton) to modern physics (quantum mechanics and relativity). For me personally, this book, every single page of it was food for my soul. Not to mention that I was delighted to learn (and accept) the premise that authors have that, after all, we are all immortal. Some of the very fortunate people on earth experience enlightenment, and this book will show every reader that there is a potential in each and every one of us to experience it. This book opened my eyes to possibilities that no one has ever presented in such a concise and beautiful way before.

There is one portion of the book where authors discuss how human beings are used to observing and exploring universe by "looking" at the skies. This book missed it by a couple of months, since it's been announced a few months back that scientists in New Mexico, for the first time, "heard" creation of the black hole. This was just an idea that Einstein had nearly 50 years ago that the events in the universe can be heard and not just seen and it was only recently that scientists could prove that events in the universe can indeed be heard by human beings. Nevertheless, this book is priceless and I am keeping it as a reference in my library. It has underlining all over the place and I just cannot stop talking about it to everyone I know.

Another wonderful thing that must be mentioned is that one author (Lanza) relies strictly on science and logic, while the other co-author (Berman) believes in a "gut" feeling in spite of the fact that he received a training as a scientist. Perhaps the part of the reason is the fact that for the period of three weeks, Mr. Berman experienced enlightenment himself. I must quote one part of the book, where Mr. Berman says: "We trust our instincts. We need no textbook to teach us to love, or to recognize danger, or to be swept into a joy by a beautiful garden. Yet when it comes to grasping the nature of existence, we fumble and stumble through insensate theories, our eyes glazed over as we hear about string theory's extra dimensions".

My personal struggle my entire life has been to reconcile my scientific mind with my deep sense of intuition. For a long time I denied myself my intuition because my rational mind always felt that there has to be a rational "proof" first before I make up my mind and fully accept my gut feeling. This book has finally thought me a lesson that I will allow my intuition to lead me first, I will trust it unconditionally and rationality will follow in its own time and show itself when it is ready. For that lesson I am so thankful to both of these authors. They are my personal heroes.

A bit of a stretch but a good read.
By Magnus Rasmusson
I have been haunted by the implications of the double slit experiment ever since I first really learned about it from the book Quantum Enigma. Since then I have read countless books on the subject both scientific and philosophical to try and wrap my head around the implications, which by the way, are huge! That we are somehow dialed in to the very fabric of the universe is clear but answering how and why is the challenge.
I tend to mostly agree with Robert Lanzas conclusions but he goes a little too far too quickly in my opinion. The issue I had the most trouble with is that there is no " out there" Everything we perceive and think of as "out there" is actually only occurring inside our skull. Out there is only light and electromagnetic fields. He uses the example of a coffee table by the window, as I recall. It does not exist. I can almost buy in to that, except the person standing next to me is "seeing" exactly the same thing. How does that work? Lanza offers no explanation. Maybe we are all connected somehow. Who knows?
Overall the book is a good attempt to answer some of these perplexing questions and a good read if not for his excellent writing style.

Pull up a beach chair and enjoy the fireworks on Mangrove Island in this contemporary romance series.

Caspian Warwick, the Marquess of Pembroke, has been enjoying life on Mangrove Island, hosting lavish parties on his yacht and getting a taste of the local female flavor. When his old friend and political advisor arrives to woo him back to public office in England, they hatch a plan to rehabilitate his image, starting with his scandalous love life.

Public relations guru Rebecca Laughlin has fled to Mangrove Island from New York after a disastrous affair with her womanizing boss. She's sworn off charmers and takes an instant dislike to Lord Warwick. In desperate need of money, however, she agrees to help him resurrect his defunct political career by finding him a suitable wife that the public will adore.

No one can deny the heat between them ~ the heated arguments and hot tempers, that is. Will they embrace their feelings for each other or will they let their past dictate their future?

Just ok
By Amazon Customer
Easy read. But I didn't really buy the relationship between the two main characters. I was never rooting for them to get together. I think it would have been more interesting if the boyfriend left behind had shown up to cause trouble and that could have brought the main characters together in a more believable way. But an easy and light story.

Great stand-alone
By Jennifer VonCanon
I love that I want to read Mangrove Island because I enjoy the story line. I hate finding a collection and each story is a continuation of the previous book. These do flow together with characters and locations but each one is also a wonderful stand alone book that makes you want to read the next story.
