A very gripping thriller indeed

Abduction must be a parent’s worst nightmare. David doesn’t only lose his wife in an accident but his six year-old daughter disappears. He remarries and has a son with his second wife. Then, unbelievably, his daughter reappears, now aged thirteen. In this gripping and disturbing thriller we find out gradually what has happened to young Natasha over the intervening years. DCI Tom Douglas becomes involved when David’s second child is kidnapped and we watch as his mother, Emma, struggles with the decision to involve the police. We find out more about Tom’s late brother Jack and his relationships in this story, too.

Rachel Abbott’s plots are always complex but believable psychological thrillers and this is no exception. I found myself asking what I would do in this case and I honestly don’t know. A very gripping thriller indeed. I received an advance copy of this book from the author, in exchange for a review.

Good story, Would recommend.

I loved the twists and turns in the story. Emma is everything I could want in a main character. - a good person dealt some tough choices, who handles her suddenly upside down life without turning into a crazy witch or a helpless female who must be rescued. The story moved along at a fast pace and I finished it in two sittings. I liked that it covered some horrific topics but didn't get weird or too detailed about them, as some of the authors past works have. The end wrapped up a little too quickly for me which is why the 3 stars not the 4, I think it almost hit. It also wasn't wrapped up with a neat bow. I hope I get a little more closure in the next book but since this just came out it's going to be a long time coming. I hate leaving characters dangling in hurt and limbo for a year, and it isn't just the main storyline that got left dangling. I would still recommend this a good read.

Another brilliant psychological thriller from Rachel Abbott

Stranger Child is Rachel Abbott’s fourth book but rest assured, she hasn’t run out of good ideas yet.

Emma Joseph is married to David a successful man whose first wife, Caroline, died in a car accident six years before. Emma lives with the reminder of her beauty in a painting and the memories of the long years where she supported him with his grief because David didn’t just lose his wife in the accident before the emergency services arrived his six-year-old daughter, Natasha, disappeared, seemingly into thin air. Finally life is looking up and Emma and David have had baby Ollie and Emma is enjoying motherhood and then one day everything changes,
What would you do if you were at home gazing out of the kitchen window and suddenly you saw a pair of eyes behind you, watching you, in your own kitchen. At that moment everything changes for the Joseph family.

It doesn’t take long before Emma calls on her friend DCI Tom Douglas, who readers of Rachel Abbott’s previous books will remember. In my mind’s eye he is dashingly gorgeous and a thoroughly upright Police Officer who really cares about the victims in the cases he investigates. Anyway I digress, Emma soon realises that perhaps in this situation she shouldn’t have involved the Police as things get much, much worse.

I love a good psychological thriller and this one definitely has the thrill aspect at its heart assisted by the fast pace full of tension from the opening sentence. This is one of those books that I shelve under compulsive reading, I know from the start that I’m in for a treat and I just have to keep flicking the pages to see what delightful twist will present itself on the next page, to observe each character adapt as they accustom themselves to new pieces of information the events unfold. One of the things I love about Rebecca Abbott’s writing is that her characters feel realistic because they react like real people even in extraordinary situations, although there are several people in this book that I wouldn’t fancy meeting on a dark night, or even in broad daylight! As in the previous books Tom Douglas is working with Becky Robinson and it is lovely to have such a supportive working relationship within crime fiction and although we only ever get snippets of their personal lives it is clear that Tom is still struggling to come to terms with his elder brother’s death some years before.

The only complaint I have is that the short chapters that break up the 350+ pages meant that I felt like a child again as I murmured to myself, just one more chapter, at least a dozen times after I should have been fast asleep and saying to your colleagues that you’re tired because you read too much the night before didn’t really garner me much sympathy.

If you haven’t read any of Rachel Abbott’s earlier books in this series, you really should although each one can be comfortably be read as a stand-alone as no reference is made to previous cases so once you’re hooked you can start at the beginning.

Best book on acting I've ever read!

I've read Strasberg, Adler, Meisner, Suzuki, Morris, Mamet, Chekov and several other acting books by lesser-known authors. Without question, Guskin's book is the best, most immediately usable method I have ever encountered. Guskin gives so many useful exercises to undertake his innovative approach along with a great deal of advice for solving a myriad of problems and issues actors face.

When I began reading Guskin's book I was intrigued but skeptical. The approach seemed like it just might be extraordinary, but I had questions as to whether it would work within certain contexts I faced as an actor. For example, what do I do when I'm in the middle of an audition and I freeze and nothing is coming to me? What good is Guskin's approach then? Much to my delight, Guskin addresses this question in a thorough and satisfying way. In fact, Guskin answered all of my practical acting questions and gives simple, usable solutions which all fall within the context of his unique acting approach.

Just like any acting approach, ultimate success comes with undertaking his advice and practicing, practicing, practicing his approach. Do this and you will reap great rewards.

My one slight reservation, which doesn't diminish the power of the book, is that casting directors for film and television often want you to come into an auditon situation with a 'final performance' for the audition. They do not want you to 'play' or 'discover' various versions of your performance during your audition. Casting directors for film and TV want you to give them the character as it is stated in the written character breakdown that they give you. Yes, this 'final performance' too, can be accomplished using Guskin's technique, but one needs to go into such audition situations very well-rehearsed beforehand.

Indeed, Guskin is correct in asserting that this very preconceived notion of character required by film and TV casting directors is far less prevalent in the theater and in theater auditions. This is not a caveat, just some additional info.

Truly the finest, most simple, practical and usable acting book I've ever read.

Just Get Real!

Harold Guskin's approach is brilliant in its simplicity. He takes you away from "techniques" and back to the reality of being in the moment. When I practice his approach I'm able to truly listen and dialogue with the other actors on a deeper level, and to respond to their words and mine from an internally, gut-motivated, truly living and experiencing in the moment place. From the stage or the audience the result is more exciting, more alive, and much more meaningful. I never have to try to memorize lines when I work from this angle either. The words take on a life of their own and take up residence, flowing freely when the time comes. The result is a fresher and more alive characterization too -- not "overstudied". Mr. Guskin's approach is refreshing. I urge every actor to buy this book, get real, and stop acting.

Even a beginner can benefit from this book.

After taking an acting class for the past two months, I have had various highs and lows both on stage and off. This book prepares you to accept those accidents of creativity and freedom that make good acting. The author is not exponent of any particular school of thought or ideology. Rather he uses his real world experience as an acting coach to such players as Kevin Kline, Matt Dillon, Bridget Fonda, Glenn Close and many others to show how vulnerability and "taking words off the page" rather than memorizing them will contribute to unexpected and startling performances.
His advice for conquering fear, relaxing and "going with the flow" is unconventional, but delightfully intelligent. The author speaks out on auditions, being on stage, and his biggest push is for actors to "be themselves" and let the words in the script speak for themselves. To stop acting, is to start being real, to finding the truth--and if I sound like I'm spouting gibberish, I assure that his writing is clear, concise, logical and well reasoned--and will lead to a deeper and more thoughtful understanding of acting.

A Good, but Selective, Account of Naval Battles Fought with Gunfire

I found this book to be a generally well-written account of naval battles during World War II fought with gunfire. It is attractively published with wide margins that invite annotations and includes a comprehensive collection of maps, drawings, and photographs. The maps are particularly helpful since the author’s very thorough descriptions of some of the battles are occasionally difficult to follow on their own. I also note that there are portions of the book that rely so heavily upon jargon that they may be challenging for a general reader while at other points the use of slang and hyperbole may be irritating to a specialist.

That said, Mr. Stern does a nice job of covering the material he decided to include. For instance, he provides a good account of the roughly eighteen-month period between the destruction of the Graf Spee and the sinking of the Bismarck that may be less well known to American readers. What I found to be frustrating was his application of the criteria that he set forth in his introduction for a battle meriting a place in his book.

The title Big Gun Battles suggested to me that this would be a book about battles fought with big guns, or alternatively big battles fought with guns. Although the second interpretation comes closer to what Mr. Stern explains as his purpose, his application of it is highly random. He describes the battles between the British and the Italians in the Mediterranean quite well, but he says nothing of the Battle of Cape Matapan, which unquestionably included a big battle fought with big guns. He does, however, cover the Royal Navy’s use of aircraft to sink and damage Italian ships at Taranto without any gunfire. Likewise, his description of commerce raiding by the Germans during early stages of the war does involve big guns, but hardly battles, or the “warship duels” mentioned in the subtitle. Turning to the Pacific, he relates a number of cruiser and even destroyer actions but omits the confrontation between capital ships that resulted in the destruction of the Kirishima by the battleship Washington.

I liked what Mr. Stern had to say, but I wish he had been more inclusive and said more.

Excellent writing and informative, especially on actions in the North Atantic. Seems slightly arbitrary in what is included.

This is yet another good read from Seaforth publishing. The writing is good, the illustrations rather good, maps useful. My only complaint is the selection of actions; anything involving aircraft carriers or torpedoes is left out. I think the many actions around Guadalcanal ought to be included, even if many of the ships sunk were victims of torpedoes.

The selected actions are appropriate, and provide a great deal of context. The British-German battles include the German commerce raiding by German naval vessels, which was far more extensive than I had realized. Even if you are a naval junkie, you may find out something new.

The battles described include the Graf Spee episode, the famed Bismarck action, and several in far Northern waters. One battle between the British and the Italians is described. The Japanese wipeout of the ABDA forces in early 1942 is described, almost with a sense of duty and valor meeting fate. A battle I had thought was obscure is covered, near the Aleutians between American and Japanese units, as is one portion of the vast battles in the Philippines.

As an American, I had been familiar with the Pacific conflict, but found out I didn't know so much about the British-German actions in the Atlantic. For me it was worth the read for that alone.

'Naval historian Stern ('Destroyer Battles', 'Fire From Heaven', etc.), reminds us that despite the importance of air power in the naval operations of the World War II, there were a lot of gun fights between major surface forces. This is not a comprehensive treatment of surface action by cruisers and battleships, but rather a sampler of encounters from 1939 through 1944. Coverage is better for actions between the Royal Navy and the Italian and German fleets, but several notable actions in the Pacific theatre are included. The details of the actions are generally well told, and, include more coverage of the Axis side. In many cases, Stern’s treatments are at odds with long-accepted versions of the events, due partially to the refutation of lingering wartime propaganda, and particularly to the increasing availability of German, Italian, and Japanese sources on these operations. The maps are well done, and Stern is careful about technical terminology. Big Gun Battles is a useful read for anyone interested in the surface side of the naval war, and would make an excellent introduction to the subject for the novice. '

Thus, advances in the rapidity and accuracy of pathological diagnosis have often led to changes in clinical management and, recently, improvements in clinical diagnosis, particularly CT scanning, have brought about a change in emphasis in the practice of neuropathology. In this textbook we have sought to present a widely based account of neuropathology in combination with information from clinical experience. We chose this approach in order to emphasize the close interrelation between clinician and pathologist. The book grew out of a course organised jointly by two neurologists and two neuropathologists from the Depart­ ments of Neuropathology and Neurology of The London Hospital and The University of Southampton. It is hoped that the book will be useful not only to pathologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists, but also to general physicians. In a period of rapid advance in knowledge it is important to recognise how changes in the clinical and laboratory disciplines overlap. In order to make the most of consultations with pathologist colleagues the clinician must know what skills and techniques are available in the laboratory, and similarly, the pathologist must keep abreast of changes in clinical practice. In the past the clinician and pathologist have often been slow to appreciate advances in each other's fields.

About the Author

Marcel Borgi is a certified Mars Venus Coach and financial controller who spends his time outside of work offering workshops and one-on-one coaching. The Author, Marcel Borgi, used a very simple strategy in explaining his ideas, he also answers most of the questions that come to your mind as a reader, because he goes into a deep detail about important life conflicts, how, why, and when it can happen, reasons, solutions....
Marcel also wrote some of his personal life experiences, amazing how a person from one side of the globe, will make most of the readers, all over the world, feel as if he is talking about them and not himself, and, by reading further, you will find out why....
If you want to change your life, you want to reach happiness, I advise you to read the book.
No matter how much problems you have, Marcel lost everything he had, NOT literally but for real, he reached ground zero after having an empire, and by using his book's strategies, he reached happiness.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ALL IT IS FULL OF LIFE AND GOOD INFORMATION
I felt like the author is sincere in wanting to help me be happy. He shows a very strong belief, coupled with a great life experience in good times and bad times. He reinforces his ideas with scientific evidence from good renowned researchers and respected authors.

My 12 Year-Old Son Loved This

Having recently seen the Mythbusters episode about the infamous prison break from Alcatraz, my son was interested in learning more. This book did not disappoint him. It covers that incident, as well as the surprising history of the penitentiary over the decades. Of course there's the requisite story of the Birdman of Alcatraz, but my son found some of the lesser-known historical details, such as how the island was used for protest in the 60's, even more interesting.

We learned lots from this book!

I got this book for my 5th grader who has been fascinated with Alcatraz ever since his sister went there and brought home Key 117! the missing key. It was easy enough for him to read and had a lot of information that grabbed his attention and didn't leave him bored!

I bought it for a sixth grade student who showed an interest in the topic. He is a struggling reader and was not able to read all of the text, but the pictures and captions held his attention.
