wanted more depth

this may be the only career guide using enneagram personality typing. as there are a million and one guides on getting a job i would have preferred to see much more depth on matching careers to personality types and much less on the basics of getting a job.

this book only looks at the 9 primary personality types. it would have been a real gem and much more helpful if it had included sections on the combo of primary and secondary or "wing" types. everyone has a wing and the wing is very important. to use a food analogy, if the primary personality type is the meat, the wing is the curry, or the tomato sauce or the bbq sauce. it's the combination of the meat PLUS the sauce that gives you different dishes.

using an enneagram example, a Type 5 "Observer/Investigator" with a Romantic streak looks to express individuality. but an Observer with the Questioner wing is into reducing risk. these 2 people will want very different career scenarios. So, looking at career matches just from the primary trait perspective is grossly incomplete. imo, it's not that hard to consider what careers match the 9 primary personality types. the real challenge is matching primary and wing.

i'm sure the reason the authors didn't do this is because it would take a lot more time and pages to cover the 18 combo types. but since people are a combination of types and have to deal with matching a career to their combo that's the book that needs to be written. and that's why i only give it 3 stars.

otherwise, it is good as far as it goes. and the system for analyzing career paths is interesting and easy to use.

the problem is the authors didn't focus on what makes this guide unique, using enneagram personality typing to analyze career paths, and tried to be an all-in-one career path/job hunting guide. there are a lot of more comprehensive guides on job hunting out there. so they missed the mark on both scores.

also, the lone negative reviewer is right, you do need a basic understanding of enneagram personality typing to make best use of this-though the authors do a good job of giving a top-level primer. you also need to understand what primary and secondary personality traits you possess. reading the descriptors of the primary 9 and then picking the one you relate to is not the best way. it may not even be particularly accurate. there are online tests you can take for free. search for, "free enneagram tests" and ones from the national enneagram group in Ca. will pop up. i recommend taking the longer version of the test for the most accurate results.

re: the test. there are no "right" answers and you won't help yourself by trying to make yourself "look good" by answering in one way or another. the key is to be as honest as possible. so think a little bit before you answer. example: one question says something like, " i like my office space neat and tidy." well, who doesn't. but look at your office. if it usually looks like a collection of piles of stuff AND you operate quite well in that environment then that statement is NOT very true for you. Another example, "i value helping others." again, who doesn't hold helping others in high regard? the question for you is how much do you incorporate that into your life or wish you could incorporate that in your life. If you volunteer everyweek and tithe 10% etc. that's very important to you. if you only give money at Christmas, then it's probably not so important. BUT if you're working 80hrs a week and don't have time to volunteer but wish you had a job where you could then it's more important. See what I mean? How you answer is critical.

to sum up:
1. this book is good as far as it goes
2. you do need some understanding of enneagram personality typing to make best use of it. try "Personality Types" by Riso.
3. don't try to guess your type. take the long test online.
4. to make the best use of enneagram personality typing to determine best career paths for you, you will need to understand your "wing" type. unfortunately this book won't help much there. but it is a good starting point.

Discover a Career That Gives You Joy

"Just as important as knowing your strengths is understanding your needs" is a quote from page 9 of The Career Within You. We would all love to have a career that not only utilizes our talents, but helps us feel fulfilled and happy. Using knowledge of the Enneagram, a personality typing system, Wagele and Stabb will help you do just that.

If you do not already know your Enneagram type, the authors have included a short questionnaire to help determine your personality type. They added examples of famous people and their characteristics to help you get a better feel for each of the nine Enneagram types. Additionally, Wagele's illustrations and witty humor help reveal characteristics of the Enneagram types in a fun way.

The first nine chapters are devoted to the each of the personality types of the Enneagram. Each chapter lists positive aspects of the type, along with traits of "the other side", as the authors call our more self-destructive behaviors. These traits will then be used, as the authors put it, "to coax your career preferences from the truest part of yourself." The Wagele-Stabb Career Finder is an easy-to-follow guide designed to take you step-by-step through a process to find a career using the qualities most important to you.

Chapter Ten contains information to help you assess your current job and decide whether to keep it or find another. There are worksheets for each Enneagram type that will help answer that question. This chapter will also help you rate the importance of other factors such as salary and predicted future growth. Finally, it will help you prioritize aspects you feel are job necessities, such as location, hours, and benefits.

The last chapter deals with the actual job hunting. Wagele and Stabb help you identify job objectives and give helpful advice on writing a resume using the knowledge of strengths of your Enneagram type. There are also sections on networking, cover letters, employment agencies, interviews, and more.

I found this book to be an excellent guide to making the best career choices for each Enneagram type's happiness, job fulfillment, and success. I highly recommend it for all ages and groups of people. It would be beneficial to high school and college students trying to discover where they want their career paths to take them, people in mid-age who are finding themselves dissatisfied with their career choices, those who have recently become unemployed, or anyone wanting to live their lives to the fullest and follow their heart's desires.

Because I ranked this strength the highest, I then looked at the careers listed in the Adventurer section, noting which ones utilize synthesizing information--as rated by fellow Adventurer types.

I was blown away at the accuracy Wagele-Stabb Career Finder. Would you believe that EVERY career that I found interesting was one that I either dreamed about as a child, seriously considered in High School, majored in at college or actually PURSUED as an adult! In fact, I'm insanely happy with my three current careers and--you guessed it--they all use my preferred strength of synthesizing information! (In case you're wondering, the careers are Writer, Entrepreneur and Stay-at-Home Parent).

But although information contained in The Career Within You passed my personal criteria for accuracy, excellence, comprehensiveness and practicality, I felt that I had to ask someone else to test the Wagele-Stabb Career Finder. Knowing that my husband is a Peacemaker type, I asked him to rate his favorite strengths in terms of job. He selected Capacity to Repeat the highest. I then asked him to look at all the careers and put a checkmark next to the ones that he would enjoy doing.

Get this: almost every job he selected was one that he actually did in the form of a hobby or used at his current employment (which he finds satisfactory)! (And I learned something about him, too; I had no idea he'd like a job as a Personal Organizer! I told them that they are in vogue right now.)

However, The Career Within You doesn't stop there (and compared to a lot of personality and career guides, that would still make it a superior book!). There are also Job Fit Worksheets for each type so you can compare the jobs you've held or are thinking of pursuing, create a starter resume according to your type's strengths, and identify job objectives (including high pay or recession-proof careers). The book also helps you perfect an "elevator" speech, as well as provides tips for getting the word out about your job search and interviewing (and which types could help you with various aspects of securing a job).

Worthy Tome

This is a good book. I have several editions of this book, including a very early one. In my view, in looking for a thorough perspective of software engineering, there are two major routes: McConnell/Weigers series or one of the comprehensive volumes by Pressman or Sommerville. McConnell's books (Code Complete, Rapid Software Development, and Software Estimation) and Weigers (Software Requirements) are each highly detailed. Hence, four-plus books. Pressman encapsulates the whole shebang into one big comprehensive volume. Not as detailed as those Microsoft Press authors, but that's not a drawback. If you've been practicing for a long time or you're a project manager, sometimes a substantive overview is what you need, not minute details. You're not living in the deep details anyway, your engineers are. Plus, the coverage of the more advanced development technologies, like formal methods, are very good and not included in the Microsoft Press books. Bottom line: if you're a technology director or project manager and want the big picture (in one place), get Pressman. If you're a systems analyst or software engineer and want the larger view, get McConnell and Weigers. (I have not read the Sommerville text, but from the table of contents there's a chapter on security which the other books only cover lightly if at all.)

Pressman is too credulous, scope is too broad, examples need to be worked out in more detail, fit together better.

I used SEPA 6th edition as the textbook for CSE 5324 Software Engineering 1: Analysis, Design, & Testing (a graduate course) at the University of Texas at Arlington during the fall of 2007. I assigned chapters 1 through 14 only.

SEPA describes many software engineering methods, techniques, languages, formats, standards, etc. When I read the discussions of each of these, each discussion sounds more like a press release or an excerpt from an abstract of a paper describing the method, etc. In short, I find Pressman too credulous of the claims made by the originators. Pressman needs to be more critical & insightful in order for me to decide whether a given method is appropriate for a project or not.

Also, SEPA is too broad, the examples need to be worked out in more detail, and the examples need to fit together better, as in a worked-out case study project.

For CSE 5325, I now use "Applying UML and Patterns, 3rd edition" by Craig Larman (plus a smattering of other material to fill in areas required in the course's catalog description).

Large book with complex and boring language

I am studying for an M.S in software construction in Denmark and this textbook was assigned to a course covering Software Engineering this last semester. The semester at the same time was focusing on teaching the theory of compilers and computation complexity.

Being from Denmark, english is not my native language and I must say that the verbose language used in this book sometimes had me pulling my hair. It seems I am not alone when i say that. Most of the reviews here tell about problems with the overcomplex language used.

I am not sure why the outher finds this necessary. There is also much use of references to other (somewhat outdated) books about the subject. I am not sure how many several authors I have read when i finish this one - it must be several. The left-margin is used for key-points, little advices, web-references which is a great idea. But they do take away the focus of the main text.

I cannot say whether or not it presents the material correctly or if something is missing or the information is outdated or whatnot - I just do not like this book. It seems it was written for software engineers already in the field (it is the practitioner's approach) and the only thing they really need is a (grown up) presentation of the methods used in modern software engineering. And this book does contain that - indeed. Atleast it seems like it.

This book is not for students which at the same studies technical courses like compilers and complexity theory. The intended reader for this book was perhaps never meant to produce source code but instead do the management of these chaotic projects. Though, this I am not sure of, since I an not a practitioner - but a hardworking student seeing myself reading this while coping with the immense culture shock it is for me to realize that I do not know anything about developing software.

The book does manage to give away information (if read carefully) and from one perspective it is not just a waste of money. One usefull feature are the examples of dialogs between members working on a fictive software project. They are very informative.

But to use it like is has been done in my situation is just a clear misconception of the reality which lies in the study of the conceptually hard areas of this kind of education.

Bottom-lines:

- You like programming, mathematics, theoretical studies and understand that careful planning and execution of software projects is a requirement - get another book on software engineering. Perhaps the one by Sommerville or McConnels's Rapid Development are good bets.

- You have been working in the field of software engineering for several years but haven't really gotten the touch of programming or have had ups and downs managing software projects, buy this book indeed, you'll cope with it just fine.

This Book Is Not an A-plus One

Sadly, for a customer service book, it may not serve you well because the errors in it are distracting. As an example, in the "Another Look" section on page 112 reads, "Five Ways to Make the Most of Customer Insights" and in the initial paragraph it says, "IBM Corporation and the Pepper and Rodgers Group identify six ways companies can sharpen and focus their insights," yet it lists only four. The mistakes also range from grammatical to missing words. The book bothers me so badly that I want to edit it and then mail it to the publisher. I feel strongly about this because it teaches people about delivering "A-plus" products, services, information etc. But, then again, this is probably how it comes up with other editions.

Custom Service is Misery

I bought this book for school and read one paragraph and already hate it. Look this is nothing more than a common sense guide to bull s***ting your customers. You will learn nothing from this book, but college requires it so buy from an independent seller and help them recoup the loss from their college degree.

It is an ok textbook. I got the e-textbook version and was able to use it on my smartphone and laptop. Also, this was for a college class. We had 3 tests and it allowed me to search through the text for the answers to all the copied questions. I mean 90% of the questions were exact words from the book. So I am really glad that it helped me out in that way vs. trying to look for every single answer in an actual textbook.

Provides a comprehensive overview of Microsoft Office 2016

This book offers an almost 1000 page introduction to the capabilities and features of Microsoft Office 2016. There are sections that delve into using Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Publisher and OneNote. For most users (all but daily power users) , the material in this book will be sufficient to guide them through most everything they need to do with documents, spreadsheets, emails and presentations.The examples are helpful and complete - making it easy to implement the author's suggestions. If you are new to Office 2016 - or just think you need more details on how to use Office more effectively - then you should benefit from reading this book (and having it on hand for reference).

I prefer the eBook to the printed version, because I can read it on my Kindles and also on the Computer and that I can activate Hyperlinks.

Other important reasons are, that it is part of a series of eBooks with the same layout about Windows!0 and all Programs of the Microsoft Office Suite 2016, that updates are free of charge and that it costs about only 50% of the printed versons

Some additional features would help, to master all the explained features of Office 2016, like using graphical maps or checklists, which help to apply all features without having to read all the text again.

Dapper Carter's Messy Life Gets Messier

Dapper Carter is back. His escapades are even more wild this time around. A few old friends return to help him through the foolishness that is his love life. The ladies still love him and he loves them back. Dr. Pepper, his no nonsense therapist not the beverage, gives him an assignment that gives the reader a better understanding of why Dapper behaves the way he does.

Dapper manages to get himself into some hilarious situations. I found myself giggling out loud at times. This was a good follow up to the 8 Rules of Dating. I'm anticipating Alan Mitchell's next novel.

A Book that Quenches a Reader's Thirst

When I read "Dapper Carter's 8 Rules of Dating", I enjoyed it to the fullest. Well-written and timely, I thought that was the last I would read about him. Nope. Lo and behold, "Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws" hit my email. I really couldn't stop reading this follow-up. Let me preface it this way: I'm the same age as Dapper, and the same astrological sign. Our lives are similar in some respects. However, what really caught me in this book was the characterization. We, the readers, learn more about Dapper in this sequel. More about his insecurities, his interactions with people, his life plans, etc. Still slick with his mouth, in many ways, Dapper leaves us with some gems.
In this book, we find Dapper post-marriage and on the brink of a milestone birthday. He has to do some vital introspection and decide what to do with the information. He enlists help with this task. A professional helps him dig deeper into his psyche, yet his life choices are the true harbingers of his personal truth.
I found the language of this book to be perfect. Not so "urban" that it would turn a reader off and not so high-brow that is was trying too hard. It found a middle ground that felt authentic. Friends of mine speak like this, as do yours. All the characters are described well and are believable. None seem to be out of their elements. You can envision these people in your everyday life. They're all relatable. Dapper's best friends are still around and have gone through some changes of their own.
Alan Mitchell has done it again. A very comical and witty book. Minus a few editorial issues, I give this book a 4 out of 5. The excerpt of the next book is in the back and I can't wait to read that.

Dapper's Journey

Dapper Carter is back with more fun and laughs in Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws by Alan Mitchell. Dapper has recovered from his recent divorce from Kennedy with his rules of dating. After mastering his 8 rules of dating, Dapper is lead into the arms of Rain Van Ness. Dapper learns that everything is not as it seems as his relationship with Rain ends.

Dapper's therapist, Dr. Pepper, gives him an assignment that prompts the 5 fatale flaws. While researching, Dapper meets a variety of women who bring out different behaviors in him. This journey of creating the 5 flaws has Dapper learning a lot about himself as a person and discovering who he is meant to be.

Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws is about a man finding himself whether good or bad. I love that readers will see a different side of Dapper Carter in this new installment. This was a funny story of the main character's self- discovery. My favorite flaw is "Sabotage" because we all are our own critic and often times we harm ourselves in doing so, which is one of Dapper's characteristics. The author does a wonderful job in placing women in Dapper's life that are very unique. I appreciated the flaws being more solid than the corny rules in the previous book. This was an entertaining book with a hint of drama which held my interest. I recommend Dapper Carter's 5 Fatale Flaws to others.
